VE Day Anniversary
Eighty years ago, The Hoe was crowded with relieved city residents coming together to celebrate the end of five gruelling years of war in Europe. On Thursday (8 May) The Hoe will again be the scene of celebrations commemorating the VE Day anniversary.
Activities throughout the day will include picnics, stalls, live music, Commonwealth war graves tours and vintage vehicle displays. The Government has announced a change of time for the national two-minute silence so Plymouth City Council has amended the schedule for the day - the event will now start with a flag-raising ceremony at 11.30am, followed by the two-minute silence at midday. The day will conclude with a beacon lighting at 8.40pm.
VE Day 80 activities are also take place at The Box, Central Library, Plymouth Market and Mount Edgcumbe.
Tree Festival
Don’t tell Plymouth Council, but the Plymouth Urban Tree Festival - a celebration of city centre trees - starts tomorrow (Tuesday) and sees a whole host of more than 40 events at different locations including guided tree walks for all ages and abilities, charcoal making, a photography competition, tree talks, a film event, poetry reading and art shows. There's something for everyone and nearly all the events are free. Details are here.

Welcome to Plymouth!
The Spirit of Adventure visited Plymouth Sound this weekend - the latest cruise liner to visit our shores. And the Hoe laid on a spectacular welcome, with a wonderful wigwam tent erected alongside our memorials.
Several beacons were set ablaze inside our waste bins to accompany the tent.
What a welcome to our city!
We Plymothians certainly know how to put on a show for our international visitors! Bravo!
